Written Materials
CH Murphy | Clark-Ullman, Inc. is committed to safety. Our Safety Manual contains written practices and procedures for dealing with issues ranging from safe equipment operation, to vessel and confined space entry, to fire precautions, to welding safety, and hazardous material handling, among others.
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available to all employees and customers for materials used in the course of our work. As a condition of employment, all employees receive training and instruction in safety as it applies to their particular job.
Safety Incentive Program
CHMCU has instituted a Safety Award Program in which employees are rewarded with bonuses and incentives for safe working practices. We feel that the safety of our employees and our customers is our #1 priority.
Safety Meetings
We consider tool box safety meetings a key element in our safety program. Safety subjects which relate to our type of work, housekeeping, special area hazards, safety clothing, accident prevention, and accident reviews are generally the topics discussed. Tool box safety meetings are conducted by the supervisor/foreman on a weekly basis for lengthy jobs and prior to beginning jobs of less than a week's duration.
Safety Audits
Our safety team periodically audits jobsites to determine if everything possible is being done to provide a safe work environment for our employees. Tools, although inspected before leaving the shop and on the jobsite by supervision, are again inspected by the safety team during audits. Any tool found defective is removed and returned to the shop for proper disposition. The safety team also monitors personnel protective equipment, confined space entry procedures, and lockout/tagout procedures to make sure the highest safety standards are being applied in a practical manner. When we perform work on site, we adhere to the safety programs and practices of our customers and OSHA safety standards-as a minimum.
CH Murphy | Clark-Ullman, Inc. is dedicated to maintaining a safe working environment for its employees, the employees of customers, and other contractors working in the same area.
A Drug and Alcohol Policy was established by the company in 1990 to prohibit the use of substances in the workplace. It allows for random testing of employees and testing for justifiable cause and after an accident. It also allows for search and seizure of contraband from employees lunch boxes and vehicles brought on the customer's worksite.
We recognize that alcohol and drug abuse is a highly complex problem. Supervisors are trained in identifying trouble signs and the administration of company policies. Employees are encouraged to request assistance through the company employee assistance program.
Safety Training
Supervisors
Our supervisory personnel are selected for their skill, knowledge, and ability to manage people effectively. They are then trained as follows:
- Jobsite safety and inspections
- First-aid classes
- Company safety program and drug and alcohol program at a supervisory level
- Equipment and tool inspection
- Conducting tool box safety meetings
- Accident reporting and investigation
- Project management
Additionally the supervisors are encouraged to attend outside training seminars at company expense.
New Employees
All new employees are indoctrinated by the superintendent at the jobsite. Newly hired employees' safety introduction includes:
- Safety manual and basic safety rules
- Accident reporting requirements
- Emergency procedures
- Hazard communications -- materials and classification
- Lockout and tagout procedures
- Respirator training
- Review of personal protective equipment
- Discussion of specific hazards at the particular jobsite
Also, if the customer/owner has their own safety indoctrination, employees will be oriented to the required procedures at each new facility.
