Exceptional depth of experience

CH Murphy | Clark-Ullman, Inc. is a combination of two companies representing over 125 years of experience in industrial boiler and furnace maintenance. Clark-Ullman Welding Co. was started in the 1920's repairing boilers for customers ranging from paper mills to chemical plants. The present company was formed in 1983 by a merger with CH Murphy, a 30-year-old firm specializing in refractory sales and installation.

Today, CHMCU serves customers in the following industries:
  • Wood products
  • Power generation
  • Chemicals
  • Steel and aluminum
  • Marine operations
  • Oil refining and others
  • Our firm has developed a vast base of over 1000 satisfied clients. We have worked for most of the major companies in the northwestern U.S. and many outside the region, handling projects ranging from small scale to well over a million dollars.

    Superior workmanship and product knowledge

Our clients know that by calling us, they get the highest quality workmanship and best product knowledge in the area.

We utilize union technicians, which not only helps ensure quality but has consistently proven to be cost-effective in terms of shorter completion times and an end product that will meet all code requirements. All of our welders are trade certified and are required to pass our own additional certification testing.

CHM|C-U has a large staff of full-time supervisors, all selected for their knowledge of their craft as well as their ability to manage people.

Many of our supervisory, engineering and technical staff had worked for the original equipment manufacturers (OEM's) or other fabrication and repair firms before joining us. They are familiar with many of the furnaces and boilers throughout the Northwest. Our corporate management staff also has extensive field experience, ranging from mechanical engineering to welding quality control.

In addition, we have a continuing education program, encouraging employees to attend seminars and schooling offered by outside sources and product experts.

    Quality materials on short notice

Each of our two locations has a stocking warehouse, and we keep more than a quarter of a million dollars in material inventory.

When downtime is a critical cost factor for you, our stock inventory and cooperative arrangements with key local vendors can get you back on line faster than any other contractor in the northwestern states. Our knowledge of the industry and our vendor relationships have been developed over many years, resulting in an unmatched level of responsiveness.

We are able to provide this quick turnaround while assuring excellent quality and remaining competitively priced.

Helping customers find the right solution

CH Murphy || Clark-Ullman, Inc. is ready to work with you to develop the best solution for your specific requirements. Our full-time engineering staff not only reviews each project for efficiency and cost-effectiveness, we also go the extra mile to suggest creative solutions and applications of new technology where appropriate.

We're not satisfied with a repair that will "just get by." We want to fix it right, and in many cases we are able to reduce costs and help improve the way your equipment works.

    An effective safety program

When workers compensation insurance for our craft workers runs as high as 40% of base wage, a good safety program can save thousands of dollars and result in lower billing rates. Our safety program, instituted in 1987, and our drug and alcohol policy, instituted in 1990, have helped bring about and maintain significant improvement in our EMR (Experience Mod Rate).

We developed our safety process by working with large industrial clients recognized for their own safety standards. It includes a safety committee which meets on a regular basis to review any accidents and establish ways to prevent recurrence. Our safety committee, division managers and corporate manager also conduct job site inspections to reinforce good safety practices.

Continuous Improvement Process - proven results

CHM|C-U is dedicated to constant improvement in productivity, cost control, and quality control as well as safety. We have a Continuous Improvement Process (CIP) in place for constant monitoring of projects, materials and equipment. At every phase of the CIP review process, our findings are discussed with the customer/owner to verify that we are doing the best possible job of meeting their needs.

Most importantly, our CIP program has proven to be an effective one, producing measurable results and enabling us to meet or exceed all customer requirements.
    • Our EMR is consistently better than the industry average for the trades we employ
    • Our workers compensation insurance costs have been significantly reduced
    • Sales volume has steadily increased

Through our CIP process, we have been selected for the bidders list by the Northwest power producers, all of the major Northwest paper mills, oil refineries, aluminum companies and steel producers, as well as the marine shipping industry worldwide.

We value our customer relationships and look forward to continuing improvement and growth in the future.
